A Year of Gaia is a comprehensive, year-long online course in traditional folk herbalism, based on the popular Year One Sacred Plant Medicine Apprenticeship, we have been offering for 24 years. A Year of Gaia will deepen your relationship to the world's healing plants, and provide a strong foundation in the herbalism of our ancestors. The plants we journey with become intimate guides and teachers, offering wisdom for a lifetime.
Students can join live for monthly class lectures and guided plant journeys, or access recordings at their own pace. Lessons include plant medicine journeys, herbalism lectures, guided meditations, plant profiles, holistic anatomy and physiology, medicine-making, and healing rituals — the roots of our practice at The Gaia School. All materials and recordings are yours to keep, with unlimited lifetime access to revisit lessons anytime.
ADVANCED PLANT MEDICINE APPRENTICESHIP: YEAR TWO 2026 - Registration Open
April 2026 - March 2027
The Sacred Plant Medicine Year 2 Apprenticeship builds on the training from Year One, deepening your relationship with the plants and advancing your herbalism education. This course is designed to prepare herbalists to support their communities or to expand your knowledge of restorative herbal medicine for yourself and your loved ones. Students strengthen their understanding of healing plants, explore advanced medicine-making techniques, and learn how to safely recommend herbs to support others.
Year Two provides a deeper understanding of the body and physiology from a holistic perspective, addressing patterns of illness. The course focuses on advanced medicine-making, materia medica, harvesting and growing, holistic anatomy and physiology, and continued journeys with the spirits of the medicine plants. All materials and recordings are yours to keep, with unlimited lifetime access to revisit lessons anytime.

TROPICAL PLANT MEDICINE 2026 - Registration Open
May - December
Tropical Plant Medicine explores the rich healing traditions of the world’s tropical climates, rainforests, and islands. In this course, we dive into the ethnobotany, history, and folklore of tropical plants while learning their medicinal properties and cultural significance. You’ll learn how to make delicious medicines from these powerful botanicals, deepening your understanding through both practical skill and relationship.
We dive deep into the medicine and ethnobotany of plants you may already know and love such as coffee, cacao, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, coconut, cardamom, citrus, hibiscus, and many others. We also discuss the medicine of tropical fruit trees such as banana, papaya, guava, soursop, coconut, lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit. Sage shares decades of experience growing, studying, and learning from these remarkable tropical plants. 🌿
THE MEDICINE OF TREES 2026 - Registration Open
March - November
The Medicine of Trees is series of six classes where we explore the lore, history, ethnobotany, and pharmacology of important medicinal tree species around the world. Together, we study how cultures have turned to trees for medicine, nourishment, and healing for thousands of years.
Students learn medicine-making techniques using leaves, bark, roots, and resins, and are guided in ways to incorporate the medicine of trees into their own lives. Each class focuses on a handful of trees, with guidance around identification, harvesting, and medicine making. Over the course of the series, we explore more than 33 trees, including evergreens, deciduous species, and tropical trees. 🌿
PHYTOCHEMISTRY OF PLANTS 2026 - Registration Open
February - July
The Phytochemistry of Plants offers an empowering exploration into the natural chemistry that gives herbs their healing power. In this course, we uncover how plant compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, and saponins create the scents, colors, and medicinal actions we experience in herbal medicine.
Blending science with tradition, students learn how these constituents interact with the human body and how to extract them effectively for medicine making. We also explore how plant chemistry connects to the energetic and ecological intelligence of plants, deepening our understanding of how medicine works within living systems. This course is perfect for herbal students, practitioners, and anyone curious about the science behind nature’s pharmacy.
THE MEDICINE OF CANNABIS 2026 - Registration Open
February - August
The Medicine of Cannabis offers an in-depth exploration of one of the world’s most versatile healing plants, — and one of the oldest known medicinal plants. In this course, we dive into the history, ethnobotany, and modern science of cannabis, exploring how it has been used for centuries as food, fiber, and medicine.
Students learn about the therapeutic actions of cannabinoids and terpenes, explore safe and effective preparation methods, and practice hands-on medicine-making with oils, tinctures, and salves. Blending tradition and current research, this course offers a grounded, holistic understanding of cannabis as a powerful herbal ally for wellness and balance.
MAGICAL HERBALISM SERIES 2026 - Registration Open

For as long as humans have walked the earth, plants have been our companions in both medicine and magic. They have been our sacred allies in healing, ritual, and transformation. This course explores the living art of magical herbalism, revealing how plants serve as bridges between the seen and unseen realms.
Students learn to work with the elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water—and the energetic correspondences of herbs to craft rituals for protection, abundance, love, peace, and healing.
